HYPOS Dialogue

Ramp-up of the Central German e-fuels industry

Short description

In the defossilisation of the transport sector, the political focus in the EU and Germany is on e-fuels.
the 22nd HYPOS dialogue, we invite you to use the example of aviation to identify the potential of Central Germany as a location for e-fuels and the main challenges. the key challenges and to jointly define steps and solutions to ensure the economic realisation of e-fuels. to drive forward the economic realisation of e-fuels.

Description

The transport sector is currently responsible for around a quarter of total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany. The dependence on fossil fuels, almost exclusively liquid fuels, is particularly high due to the special technical requirements in the mobility sector. In some cases, direct electrification is not possible. In air transport in particular, the only alternatives to fossil paraffin are biofuels or e-fuels. The aviation industry is therefore facing enormous challenges. A market for e-fuels with the necessary supply capacity must be created within a few years, comparable to, or even in conjunction with, the ramp-up of the green hydrogen economy. On the demand side, the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation legislation sets a clear framework and target: 1.2% blending of E-SAF (often referred to as e-kerosene) by 2030 and 35% by 2050.

In other countries, such as Denmark, industrial-scale plants are already in operation. With its strong expertise and potential in terms of infrastructure, know-how and resources, Central Germany is also an ideal location for the commercial production of E-SAF. It therefore has all the prerequisites to act as a model region for the development of the e-fuels industry in Germany. We are already seeing considerable interest, active planning and increased implementation initiatives for e-fuels projects in the region.

By supporting this event and this project, we are encouraging the establishment of a Central German network of feedstock producers, energy, service and technology providers, infrastructure operators and e-fuels customers, which should help to overcome barriers to entry and quickly launch implementation projects in Central Germany.
